Lot 819
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 21 mm, 5.95 g, 7 h), imitating Diocletian, 284-305, or Maximian, 286-305. IIIՒIT IIIIII Laureate and cuirassed imperial bust to left. Rev. II IISIII Roma seated left on throne decorated with X, holding Victory presenting wreath in her right hand and long scepter in her left. A lovely imitation struck on a very broad flan. About very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

This probably is a free-hand imitation rather than a copy of an actual prototype, as the obverse is decidedly post-reform in style, whereas the reverse was only struck pre-reform for either Diocletian or Maximian.
